Shalom Religious School Parents!

Message from Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev, Director of Education

Shalom Religious School Families,

Well it was certainly a busy morning at Temple Beth Shalom this morning. Along with our 210 kids and 30 staff members, we had 80 teenagers in the building finishing up their Regional event that our Youth Group hosted this weekend. On top of that, we had a terrific Performance Day as kids in 3rd-7th grade Chugim presented their activities to the rest of the Religious School. New Chugim choices will be presented next week.

As always, you can see pictures from Religious School and special this week, check out a few pictures from our Youth Group program at www.tbsohioKT.com!

Check below for information on Consecration, our Chanukah Extravaganza, our 1st Grade Family Program (date change), BeSTY Chanukah Sale, and much more!

Highlights from This Morning:

The Kindergarten Class talked about the creation of the world. We also talked about the 5 books inside the Torah and learned that Genesis is the first. We also learned about the story of Adam and Eve and made a story book of Adam and Eve. We also went outside and discussed what we thought God created that was outside.

The 1st Grade learned about blessings. We learned the blessings over wine and over Challah. We practiced the blessings over a snack and then made beautiful collages about what we bless and what we feel blessed to have in our lives. We also had music with Mrs. Rose!

The 2nd Grade learned about the Torah portion "Yitro" in the book of Exodus. They learned about helping hands and were divided up into "Chevrutah" (Partner) groups to work on projects together. They also talked about Moses who needed helping hands when he was getting all the Jews out of Egypt.

The 3rd Grade in Hebrew enjoyed a new classroom with more teachers and had a very good day! They continued to learn in their Aleph Bet Quest books and work individually and as a class on learning the Aleph Bet. The 3rd Grade Religious School class learned and discussed the "Golden Rule" that Rabbi Hillel taught. They talked about how the Torah and Judaism relate to the Golden Rule. They then played a class game in order to get to know each other better and in turn, be more respectful of the class.

The 4th Grade classin Hebrew continued working on Hebrew in their Mitkadem binders and through class work as well. They also played the game "Heads UP 7UP" in Hebrew for the end of class. The Religious School class they discussed "keeping the brit" (covenant with God). They talked about keeping and valuing a covenant and how important an agreement like that is. They discussed God's promise to make Yisrael a great nation. They then divided up into Chaurah (partner) groups and discussed the brit we have in honoring our parents.

The 5th Grade today took an in depth look at the Torah portion for this week called "Toldot." They prepared 3 different plays to perform for the rest of the school during services time and did a fantastic job! The 5th grade Religious School class discussed how the fall of Masada impacts Israel and our people today. They had a discussion on how the Jewish people invent the book on survival and go on without a nation for two thousand years.

The 6th Grade started watching and discussing the movie "Paper Clips," about a middle school class that collected paper clips to learn about the depth and breadth of the Holocaust.

The 7th Grade class today began discussing the Holocaust unit in preparation for watching the movie Paperclips next week, which chronicles a school's attempt to understand the gravity of the Holocaust. They also spent time outside and talked about "a day in the life of a 7th grader" and the choices they make.

The High School Classes

  • Tattoo Jews: class today finished talking about the Jewish views on Abortion and looked at an article about the discussion of abortion in the Torah and in the Talmud. More controversial issues will follow!
  • Tikkun Olam Green Class: class today methodically compared Ohio State's football team to the Jewish people throughout their history and we talked about the unexpected aspects of the BCS system, comparing them to the Jews' unexpected 40 year journey in the wilderness.

Sunday School for Families:

SSFP: "Hineini" Being Present for our Families

We have one shot - until our children begin to make decisions for themselves explains, Dr. Wendy Mogel, psychologist and educator. Dr. Mogel teaches that we must be present and calls this "Hineini." Just as God calls to Abraham, "Here I am," we must make active parenting decisions for our lives. We can look to find the value in every moments in our week; even the most mundane moments have the sparks of God....
