Shalom Religious School Parents!

Message from Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev, Director of Education

Shalom Religious School Families,

Hello! Well we had another action-packed morning here at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday. The school was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated Sukkot by decorating the Sukkah, spending time outside and learning about the lulav and etrog. The students in the lower school heard a story about The Holy Cow attempting to build a Sukkah on his own and the importance of working together to solve problems. The older students had the 2nd Annual Human Sukkah competition during services - fun stuff. Read below to find out what each class did this past Sunday and to learn more about exciting upcoming events.

As always, to see pictures from Sunday, please click here, at www.tbsohioKT.com

Highlights from This Morning:

  • The Kindergarten Class talked about Sukkot, calling it "The Jewish Thanksgiving." They talked about what they were thankful for and what they can do to help others. They learned about what a mitzvah is and how they completed a mitzvah that morning by dwelling in and decorating the Sukkah. They took pumpkins home and are letting gourds dry out to make maracas out of them!

  • The 1st Grade class made their beautiful class tree today - stop in the rooms and see it! They learned about Sukkot , visited the Sukkah and even made their own class Sukkah. They learned about the lulav and etrog and had a great time singing!

  • The 2nd Grade class learned about Sukkot and made Sukkot mobiles to hang in the Sukkah. They then listened to a song called "Shalom BaOlam" (Peace in the World) by Rick Recht and had a discussion about what peace is. They ended the class by talking more about the holiday of Sukkot.

  • The 3rd Grade Hebrew Class continued their study of Hebrew letters and basic reading using a fun computer program and animation in class. Make sure to check out their CDs during the week. The 3rd Grade Religious School class decorated their class board and learned lots about Sukkot and spent time in the Sukkah. They spent the last 30 minutes in Chugim (activities).

  • The 4th Grade Hebrew Class spent time learning Hebrew associated with the holiday of Sukkot. They made miniature sukkot. They also played Hebrew Bingo before working in the Mitkadem packets. The 4th Grade Religious School class did art projects focused on Sukkot. They made flower pot pictures from their hand prints that are used to decorate the Sukkah. They listened to song and learned about Peace.

  • The 5th Grade Hebrew Class focused on Hebrew reading this morning and worked on combining letters and vowels while building Hebrew reading confidence. They played a Hebrew game as well. The 5th Grade Religious School Class continued learning about the early period of Jewish history through dramatic stories. They spent the last 30 minutes in Chugim.

  • The 6th Grade Hebrew Classes focused on reviewing Hebrew vocabulary words and reading lessons. They focused on the Ma'ariv Aravim, a prayer that is in our Shabbat evening liturgy. The 6th Grade Religious School Class learned more about the mitzvah of decorating the Sukkah and its importance. They then worked together as a class to construct the world's biggest Sukkah chain and carefully carried it outside together.

  • The 7th Grade class spent lots of time outside in the Sukkah, decorating and learning much more in depth information about the Jewish law behind constructing the Sukkah, the different parts of the lulav and etrog.

  • The High School Classes

    • Tattoo Jews class got to know one another and discussed what it means to have a "Jewish view" of a given topic. They learned about Jewish Responsa Literature and how various communities sent legal and ethical questions to central rabbis. They also began discussing the Broadway musical "Rent" and how it relates to the class.
    • Pray Ball The Pray Ball class did a comparison between King Saul and Babe Ruth and also between King David and Muhammad Ali. They used these athletes to learn about Biblical Jewish history.
    • From South Park to Seinfeld. They watched an episode of Seinfeld where a character converted to Judaism, and used it as a springboard to discuss issues of conversion and how we welcome converts.
