Shalom Religious School Parents!

Message from Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev, Director of Education

Hello Religious School Families,

I hope this email finds you doing well and enjoying our Spring weather! We had another exciting day at Kehillat Torah Religious School, with lots of great Passover activities happening the building.

Please remember, we have Spring Break for the next two weeks. We will have no Sunday Religious School on March 28th or April 4th.

We will have Wednesday Hebrew this Wednesday, but not on March 31 or April 7th.

We are back in session on Sunday, April 11th!

Highlights from This Morning:

The Kindergarten Class class read a story called The Matzah that Pap Brought Home and continued talking about Passover. They used Matzah to make matzah smores, matzah with cream cheese and strawberry jam. They also made fun matzah Jewish characters.

The 1st Grade Classes today talked about Passover and made their very own seder plate. Two members of the class led us in learning about the four questions and we had a fun time reciting them! Have a great Passover everyone!

The 2nd Grade Class did a study of Passover and discussed the meaning of the holiday. Then, the class watched a special movie about a Passover seder, presented by Elie Wiesel. They spent part of the class learning about Elie Wiesel.

The 3rd Grade Class, in Hebrew, spent time watching a movie about a special Passover Seder, demonstrating the seder Hebrew that they have worked on. The 3rd Grade Judaica Class spent the morning presenting their Passover skits that they created last week. The class enjoyed acting in front of each other and learned about the exciting story of Passover.

The 4th Grade class, in Hebrew, spent time working in small groups today on reading. Small groups went all over the building in nooks and crannies and found space to spread out with their siddurim (prayer books) to work on Friday night prayers. During the Judaica class, the students led a discussion of Passover. They shared what they know about Passover. They finished out the class by watching a movie narrated by Elie Wiesel about a Passover seder. . . a great movie!

The 5th Grade Class in Hebrew, worked on small group assessments today, determining where each child is on the spectrum of Hebrew reading abilities. They broke up into groups working on reading vowels, writing and Ramah studies, and reading. The kids are improving weekly! In the Judaica class, the students are learning about the Holocaust and specifically how non Jewish people helped hide and save Jews during the Holocaust.

The 6th Grade Classes in Hebrew, started learning Torah Chanting Trope with Rabbi Benjy this morning. The kids learned four trope marks and each student even chanted a line of Torah in front of his or her peers. The Judaica class today reviewed the Passover story and learned it on a deeper level. The students then made up creative skits with the themes from the Passover story and performed them for the rest of the class.

The 7th Grade Class continued working in their Tikkun Olam curriculum today and focused on the Jewish value of repairing the world. They also spent some time with Rabbi Benjy hearing about the new 7th and 8th grade program that will be in place for next school year. They are excited for something new!

The 8th Grade Class took advantage of the nice weather and learned about world religions outside in the sunshine. Following Spring Break, they will have the opportunity to work in our Beth Shalom vegetable garden as well.

The High School Classess took time today to watch the movie Defiance. It is about Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe who escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants. The students and teachers will discuss this film after Spring Break.

The Chugim ran very smoothly this morning. Following Spring Break, we will bring back two favorite chugim, The Religious School Band and Jewish Improv.
