Shalom Religious School Parents!
Message from Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev, Director of Education
Shalom Religious School Families,
Shalom! I hope you are doing well and enjoying the warmer weather! Following last week’s Purim celebrations, we got back to work Sunday morning learning Hebrew, new songs and lots about Passover. Please be sure to check out the “Upcoming Events” section of the newsletter, as there are lots of special events coming up in the near future!
Here are a couple very important notes:
Sunday, March 22nd the 5th Grade class will be performing plays they have been working on. They’ll be on the bima at 10:35 a.m. Join us for their theatrical debut!
Also, Sunday, March 22nd is our last day of Religious School before Spring Break. We have no Sunday Religious School March 29, April 5, or April 12. We will have no Wednesday Hebrew on April 1st or April 8th.
Here are some of the Highlights from the morning:

- As always, please see pictures from this morning at www.tbsohiokt.com!
- The Kindergarten class began to learn about Passover and watched the video “Passover at Bubbe’s,” a muppet show. They made matzah covers to use at their seders and learned the blessing over matzah that we say at our seders.
- The 1st Grade class began discussing Passover and watched the movie “Prince of Egypt” in class. A discussion on the movie will follow next week!
The 2nd Grade class discussed opportunities to do g’milut chasadim – actis of loving kindness. They identified what acts of loving kindness are and will be going through stations and writing down a type of act of loving kindness they can share.
- The 3rd Grade learned about the Exodus from Egypt by doing a real life acting out of the Passover story.
- The 4th Grade discussed the idea of making peace among friends in relation to their unit on gimilut chasadim – acts of loving kindness. They are discussing conflict resolution and will be make their own “peace in a box.”
- The 5th Grade continued to rehearse their three plays based on life in the shtettle (the wise men of Helm) where Jews learned to laugh in the face of adversity. These will be performed on Sunday, March 22nd at 10:35 a.m.
The 6th Grade continued their study of Tikkun Olam, fixing our broken world.
- The 7th Grade class discussed the importance of doing good deeds in Jewish life. They also discussed what it means to be Jewish in their everyday lives.
The High School began with 4 new classes this week for 4th Quarter:
- Real World Columbus: This is a class where students will explore Jewish responses to real world issues like cheating in school, making ethical decisions, using facebook in a Jewish way, drugs and alcohol, etc.
- Leader of the Jews: This is a class in leadership that will help the kids understand how to be a Jewish leader. This is a great class for any students who are leaders at school, in youth group, BBYO or NFTY or any other organization.
- Cool Jewz: This class will examine the “cool Jew” movement in our country and will discuss what impact it has on our Jewish identity
- Roots and Shoots is a class where students will connect with other students around the country to put together Jewish projects that will help the environment and our planet.
