Shalom Religious School Parents!

Message from Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev, Director of Education

DSCF2161Shalom Religious School Families,

It was cold and snowy outside, but warm and friendly inside. We had another exciting morning at Beth Shalom today. As always, the whole building was buzzing with activity! If you haven’t joined us on a Sunday morning, please plan to stop by, enjoy a cup of coffee and see the school in action. There’s a lot going on here.

This week, enjoy pictures from Religious School and our Club 56 Undernight from Saturday evening! www.tbsohiokt.com.

Here are some of the Highlights from the morning:

  • The Kindergarten class studied tzedek (righteousness) and about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King Jr. They discussed how people can bring change peacefully, inclusively and get along in spite of differences. They made beautiful rainbow people – come see them on the classroom wall!

  • DSCF2159The 1st Grade class had a lot of fun this morning! They read three Jewish stories, created their own stories and even acted out their very own Jewish stories. All the stories had the theme of giving and gratefulness for being Jewish.

  • The 2nd Grade class learned about morning blessings through music by Sam Glaser. They made acrostic poems using the word “Thankful.”

  • The 3rd Grade class had an exciting morning with special guest Libby Bear, our community’s Young Shlicha (emissary) from Israel. They learned about Israel and played fun Israeli games!

  • The 4th Grade class discussed “Why do we pray?” Students discussed why we need to pray and what are the different ways we can pray. They did a lot of group work today.

  • The 5th Grade discussed another exciting biography this week: Joseph Trumpeldor, the one- armed soldier who was a forerunner for the creation of Israel's modern army.

  • DSCF2134The 6th Grade class finished watching the movie Fiddler on the Roof today and had a great discussion about how it relates to our lives as Jewish people in 2009.

  • The 7th Grade class began a new lesson on specific lifecycle events beginning with bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies. They learned a few Jewish vocabulary words dealing with bar mitzvah and upcoming lifecycle events.

  • High School

    • The Purim class and Going Green class combined today. They broke up into carnival committees. They also began brainstorming for a movie they’re making of a 2009 retelling of the Purim. It will be shown during the Purim carnival.

    • The South Park class began studying Jewish characters in the media and watched part of the movie Borat.

    • The Cooking class made Felafel, an Israeli favorite! They sampled delicious humus, Israeli salad and pita as well.
